MINI LABS: PRESSURE DIFFERENTIALS
PART1: CANDLE SUCKING AIR ?
PROCEDURE
MAterials: a shallow dish, matches, cylinder or flask, candle, hard-boiled egg, paper , Erlenmeyer flask
Do this set up and describe what happens.
Light
a candle and stand it upright in the middle of a pan and secure it with
meted drippings. FIll the pan half full with water. While the candle is
still burning , place a narrow glass or graduated cylinder over the
candle. Observe the base of the container, the water level in the
container, and the flame.. Record your observations.

OBSERVATIONS :
ANALYSIS
1) When does the water level in the jar rise ? Why does it rise ?
Explain in details. It has to do with air pressure and differential of air pressure
PART 2: THE MAGIC EGG
PROCEDURE:
Find a flask or jar that has a mounth slightly smaller than the
diameter of an egg. Peel the shell from a hard-boiled egg. Crumple a
piece of notebook paper and after lightinh it on fire, quickly stuff it
in the flask. Immediately place the egg over the mouth of the flask and
observe, paying particular attention to the egg when it is first on
the flask.

observations:
When does the egg enter the flask ? Why does it enter. ?
To
remove the egg from the flask , invert the flask to the egg settles in
the neck. GEntly heat the flask with a candle unti the egg is forced
out by expanding air.
Light a second piece of paper and place
it inside the flask. While holding the flask with hot mitt, quickly
place the egg in the neck and invert the bottle while holding the egg
in place. Does the agg in the egg rise into the flask again
